How To Bind A Book

how to bind a book 4115 Tutorials & Projects!

I’ve always been interested in learning how to bind a book. I saw my first handmade book in a craft store in Baltimore. It had a simple five-stitch bind, a photocopied cover, and inside was an ancient Indian folk legend. I loved it!  Now, I look for beautiful handcrafted books wherever I go.

Since that day, I’ve  tried quite a few of the easier bookbinding methods myself -  pretty much everything but traditional binding.

I’ve made stitched books, accordion books,  one page folded books (which I will eventually post a tutorial for),  stapled books, and mini books. I’ve even done quite a bit of book repair, including gluing pages to spines and repairing/replacing  covers.

These how-to’s are for traditional methods of making both softbound and hardbound books.

How To Bind A Book Using The Glue Method

Using glue to bind a book is a quick and easy bookbinding method. However, it lacks the elegance and charm stitching provides.

How To Bind A Book Using Unusual Methods

The following binding methods are rarely used today, except in art books. Many of these methods have been around for centuries, but a couple are recent innovations.

How To Bind A Book Using Unusual Materials

I like to work with shrink plastic fimo clay. I usually make items for the home or jewelry, but these projects give me a chance to spread my wings a bit.
