Reader Request: Summer Dress Pattern

I received an intriguing email last week, and because I think several other readers may be interested in my response, I’m answering the request in a post.
Question: I am a first time sewer and I want to make a simple, sleeveless, above the knee, dress for summer. The dress should be lightweight and maybe have pockets. Do know of a pattern for that?
Answer: The easiest summer dress I know of, is this Shift Dress, I found on the Martha Stewart site. It’s made from a long, thrift store skirt, with an elastic band. It should be easy enough even for a beginner to enjoy sewing, but sadly, there are no pockets. Good luck!
